Ebook About
Declared “the best survival book in a decade” by Outside Magazine, 438 Days is the true story of the man who survived fourteen months in a small boat drifting seven thousand miles across the Pacific Ocean. On November 17, 2012, two men left the coast of Mexico for a weekend fishing trip in the open Pacific. That night, a violent storm ambushed them as they were fishing eighty miles offshore. As gale force winds and ten-foot waves pummeled their small, open boat from all sides and nearly capsized them, captain Salvador Alvarenga and his crewmate cut away a two-mile-long fishing line and began a desperate dash through crashing waves as they sought the safety of port. Fourteen months later, on January 30, 2014, Alvarenga, now a hairy, wild-bearded and half-mad castaway, washed ashore on a nearly deserted island on the far side of the Pacific. He could barely speak and was unable to walk. He claimed to have drifted from Mexico, a journey of some seven thousand miles. A “gripping saga,” (Daily Mail), 438 Days is the first-ever account of one of the most amazing survival stories in modern times. Based on dozens of hours of exclusive interviews with Alvarenga, his colleagues, search-and-rescue officials, the remote islanders who found him, and the medical team that saved his life, 438 Days is not only “an intense, immensely absorbing read” (Booklist) but an unforgettable study of the resilience, will, ingenuity and determination required for one man to survive more than a year lost and adrift at sea.

Book 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea Review :

At the very top of the cover a banner declares this “the best survival book in a decade.” The irony of this sailed past me until I finished it and realized that Adrift, which was published in 2002, is vastly superior. That was the first-hand, sensitively wrought narrative of a man surviving 76 days at sea alone in a life raft. This story, as the unimaginative title suggests, is about the longest documented survival of someone adrift at sea. That someone happened to be a wily but illiterate fisherman from Mexico, whose tale is reconstructed retrospectively by a journalist. There is a tangible loss to time and translation. The author tries hard to paint a sympathetic portrait of the survivor, Salvador Alvarenga. But the elephant in the life boat is that he didn’t start his journey alone. Somewhere along the way, his young, inexperienced mate Ezequiel perished.I vividly recall the day in 2014 Alvarenga appeared on television to the world, looking surprisingly well-nourished. It is explained in detail here how he was able to sustain himself, but the obvious spectre of cannibalism is never directly confronted nor convincingly dismissed. In fact, the author goes out of his way to repeatedly stress that Alvarenga would eat anything to survive. Aside from this lingering morbidity, I was disturbed by how respect for the mate’s memory was sacrificed at the expense making Alvarenga seem heroic. He is sometimes portrayed as a cowardly burden for his captain to bear, rather than a terrified, unlucky kid. In a phrase of breathtaking callousness, Alvarenga is said to discover “the benefits of solo travel” after the death of his mate. His story is never fully developed, and will be forever unknown. There are some randomly inserted commentaries by survival experts to pad the story. It ends with Alvarenga motivated by his experience to try to redeem himself for being a deadbeat dad. Despite the reconstruction, this is still an amazing story. But to have some firsthand insight into the soul of a man lost at sea, you can’t beat Adrift.
The cover of 438 days contains a claim that, according to Outside magazine, 438 days is the best “survival book in a decade.” This reviewer has not read every survival book written in the past decade, so there might be a better survival book, but 438 days has to be a front runner among the best. The author tells the (true) story of a Mexican fisherman lost at sea for, you guessed it, 438 days. The writing is clear, if painful, to read at times. The author supplemented the fisherman’s story with brief comments from others who have survived similar ordeals and with opinions of psychologists and physicians who have researched such things. Delving into some of the psychology and comparing the fisherman's ordeal towards greatly enhanced the narrative. However, while there is some science and some commentary about those who had similar fates, it is mostly a book of great emotional impact. It is a book that, years later, you won’t forget you have read. This reviewer, however, was left with two unanswered questions. One, each chapter begins with citing the fisherman’s longitude and latitude. The fisherman had a GPS locator, but how can a GPS locator maintain a log, without fresh batteries, for such a long period? And two, as the author points out, many journalists tried to get the fisherman’s story but he does not explain he was able to gain the fisherman’s confidence. Still, these are minor questions compared to the main question/main storyline of, how did the fisherman survive? Even though 438 days could very well be the best survival book in a decade, this reviewer gives it four stars, not five. The unanswered questions don’t help, but the main reason is that is a survival book. It is not a book for everyone. It may be the best book ever in its genre in a decade, but it is in a genre that while sometimes is inspirational, is also, at times, unsettling to read.
